The Many Views of Hunter

So one of my favorite things about not only Hunter but of New York City in general is the amazing views. I’m from a small town where other schools decided to call my high school “Starfarm,” which goes to show you just how big of a change it was to move to the city. I’m still constantly in awe of the amazing architecture and find myself staring out my window on a daily basis. I see a light on in a window and begin wondering who lives there and what they’re doing. Going to Hunter took some adjusting since I was used to having an actual campus, but for me all it takes is a look out the window and I find myself wondering why I ever needed a campus to begin with.

Artist Statement

Making the move from being a biology major to a film major changed things quite a bit for me. When I actually sat down to think about what I wanted to do for a career, I had to think about what I loved. For me television and film were definitely on my list because that was where I went to escape. I’m constantly inspired and moved by all types of TV and movies.

For me, there really isn’t one incident that made me want to make the move to film. I saw some really great films but one that stands out for me is Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road. Normally this wouldn’t have been a movie I would have liked, but for some reason it really had an impact on me. The acting was brilliant, but not only that I noticed the small things. The camera angles, the cinematography, the musical score, the screenplay, and many other things all came together to create quite an amazing film. It was probably one of the first times I looked that deeply into a movie and it changed the way I saw movies. I envisioned a career in these things that seemed so small on screen but actually take a lot of work.

Having just realized that media is something I want to make a career in, I really don’t have any work to my name or know exactly what type of work I want to do. What I do know is whether it’s crying, laughing, or anything in between, I want to trigger an emotion in whoever views my work. Inspiration would be my number one goal, but I know experience is the only way to create inspirational work. I look forward to making films in the future and hope that someday I can find a work environment that would allow me to be creative, but also a place where I truly believe in the work I do.
