My first trip to the Museum of the Moving Image

So this was my first time visiting the Museum of the Moving Image and I have to say I was quite impressed. I definitely learned a lot and had fun too. There were so many interesting exhibits throughout the tour.

For me the most informative thing was definitely the sound-editing portion where a scene from Titanic was broken down. Who would have known that the smoke stack falling over is actually the sound of a trumpeting elephant? For me, when thinking about those kinds of weird sounds, I always think of old cartoons and the ridiculous sounds in them, but never realized how much further it goes. When you think of an epic movie like Titanic you would never associate anything heard with an elephant or the crunching of a soda can but it’s funny how these things fit perfectly into the film. This exhibit truly gave me a new appreciation for sound mixing and sound editing.

As the technology gets better and better it’s funny to look back at where it all started. The first film camera looked like a wooden box but that was where it all began. As film students it’s easier for us to appreciate the past technology, but sometimes we can take for granted that we just have to press a button and we have HD quality video at our fingertips. As technology moves forward it becomes more and more of a hands on experience. The virtual reality section in the museum was like the end of a road starting with that very first camera. It makes you wonder what will come next and as a lover of film I can’t wait to see just what it is!

The Many Views of Hunter

So one of my favorite things about not only Hunter but of New York City in general is the amazing views. I’m from a small town where other schools decided to call my high school “Starfarm,” which goes to show you just how big of a change it was to move to the city. I’m still constantly in awe of the amazing architecture and find myself staring out my window on a daily basis. I see a light on in a window and begin wondering who lives there and what they’re doing. Going to Hunter took some adjusting since I was used to having an actual campus, but for me all it takes is a look out the window and I find myself wondering why I ever needed a campus to begin with.

Artist Statement

Making the move from being a biology major to a film major changed things quite a bit for me. When I actually sat down to think about what I wanted to do for a career, I had to think about what I loved. For me television and film were definitely on my list because that was where I went to escape. I’m constantly inspired and moved by all types of TV and movies.

For me, there really isn’t one incident that made me want to make the move to film. I saw some really great films but one that stands out for me is Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road. Normally this wouldn’t have been a movie I would have liked, but for some reason it really had an impact on me. The acting was brilliant, but not only that I noticed the small things. The camera angles, the cinematography, the musical score, the screenplay, and many other things all came together to create quite an amazing film. It was probably one of the first times I looked that deeply into a movie and it changed the way I saw movies. I envisioned a career in these things that seemed so small on screen but actually take a lot of work.

Having just realized that media is something I want to make a career in, I really don’t have any work to my name or know exactly what type of work I want to do. What I do know is whether it’s crying, laughing, or anything in between, I want to trigger an emotion in whoever views my work. Inspiration would be my number one goal, but I know experience is the only way to create inspirational work. I look forward to making films in the future and hope that someday I can find a work environment that would allow me to be creative, but also a place where I truly believe in the work I do.
